In the never-ending quest for knowledge, NASA scientists have reported that the Phoenix lander has found traces of perchlorate in the Maritan soil. While the scientists are claiming that the Martian soil is similar to what can be found in Chile’s Atacama Desert on Earth, it seems possible that the perchlorate came from ROCKET FUEL.

And so - in my never-ending quest for knowledge - I began to research whether the rocket that took Phoenix to Mars used perchlorate and if so, was it anywhere near the lander?

The Phoenix spacecraft was built by Lockheed Martin Space Systems and was placed aboard a Delta II rocket at Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Below is a detailed illustration of the Delta II with the Phoenix lander. The key to the illustrationis provided so that you can investigate the location of solid rockets relative to the Phoenix lander. I’ll leave it to you to consider whether any perchlorate (which is a component in solid rocket fuel) might have contaminated the lander.

The stated goal behind earfl is to enable posting soundbites to the web from one’s phone. A soundbite (along with perhaps an accompanying image) is posted on the web at an earfl site. By hosting the content, small audio clips and images, Earfl begins to build a content library as I’m betting they obtain a non-exclusive license to host the content as long as it’s on their site. Later, Earfl will work to monetize this content by partnering up with other content aggregators to then compete with, or be acquired by larger efforts.

The plan will likely include offering services that leverage the content, and the fact that it’s all stored on the Earfl servers. Anonymous use of the voice data to train speech recognizers for use in nationwide call center applications would be a good candidate.
