I recently wrote about [Criteo-> http://www.plexav.com/archives/2007/criteo-widgets-and-web2u/] and their ‘autoroll’ widget that displays links to other blogs. Links to related content may be good, but the problem is that only Criteo benefits from the links in terms of page rank.

Linking to other blogs is a great idea, especially if each blog can benefit from improved page rank. I invited each of the blogs who appeared on my autoroll to link directly with Plexav. The responses I received reveal much about the blogosphere and the direction that the web is taking.

The Invitations

I invited 5 blogs listed in my autoroll to link with Plexav.com, and I linked to each of the blogs in my blogroll and in the [post->http://www.plexav.com/archives/2007/criteo-widgets-and-web2u/] itself. I figured that the links might get the blogger’s attention even if the email was overlooked.

The Responses

I did get the attention of the bloggers. Of the five bloggers I emailed, three responded. Two of the responses were in comments to the post rather than as a response via email. These two comments are telling:

  • geeks are sexy (GAS) - Hey there, we just moved our blog, could you please update your link :)
  • Manoj Ranaweera - Many thanks for the link.

Ben Yoskovitz replied directly to my email and created a link to Plexav.com at his Instigator Blog.

Sometimes i just leave comments on blogs that have something to say that i am personally interested in but my readers might not be interested in. i am sorry that people are not treating you as well as you treat them.

i have a lot of people do this to me either on my blogroll or when i feature their work on my blog. some of these people honestly don’t know that you are linking to them & some of them are only in their world.

do you ask for a link? i think that eventually most people do link to their fellow bloggers after they become really interested.

i am usually working under time constraints so it is hard….impossible even…to link to everything.

i love the titles of your sections to this blog & would like to see you be able to fill them in soon. :-)

oh…and i dugg this post…maybe that will get some discussion generated about linking courtesy (yes, there does have to be some).

Weird….your blog doesn’t seem to like capitalization that much. Perhaps, one has to use the caps lock even though it already prints in caps…oh well, excuse my capitalization.
