A team of researchers has likely discovered the cure for Diabetes! The medical researchers found that diabetes is the result of malfunctioning pain neurons in the pancreas. The nerve cells (neurons) secrete neuropeptides that are instrumental in the function of islet cells. Islet cells produce the insulin that we each use to regulate blood sugar levels. Malfunctioning pancreatic nerve cells fail to produce enough of the neuropeptides, stressing the islet cells which become chronically inflamed and fail to function properly. Dr. Hans Dosch, a member of the team noted, “(pull)I’ve never seen anything like it. In my career, this is unique.(/pull)”
By addressing the problematic nerve cells, the researchers have completely cured diabetic mice. The results were completely unexpected and which Dr. Dosch described as, “… a shock, really out of left field, because nothing in the literature was saying anything about this.”
While commercial products may be years away, this discovery marks a watershed event in medicine. Diabetes was thought to result from improper immune system response, but it appears to be a neuropathic condition. It’s likely that other diseases attributed to a malfunctioning immune system are also in fact neuropathic. Crohn’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis are potential examples. Immunologists are skeptical of the findings, but time and further data may convince them that Diabetes is not borne from an overactive immune system, but rather from inactive pain neurons.

It seems that immunologists who are skeptical of the results might be better served to spend some time considering how such a result might also be applied to other “immunological” conditions. Perhaps medical specialization has produced doctors and researchers that lack the holistic understanding to pursue such lines of thought. While there are always those exceptions to the rule, I’d feel better if being an exceptional doctor or medical researcher was the norm, rather than the exception.
