It appears that 2005 was a very BAD year for perennial ice in the arctic. Perennial ice remains year-round and has a lower salt concentration than the annual ice that melts in the Summer and reforms in the fall. Lower salt concentration gives perennial ice different characteristics that can be detected by a NASA satellite.

For the past 30 years, the Arctic’s been losing about .78% of the perennial ice annually. In 2005, perennial ice in the arctic declined by 14%!. That is not a typo! Scientists from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, credited with the report, maintain that there might be a reason for the loss other than Arctic heating.

The only thing that seems certain at this point….we’re experiencing a period of growing uncertainty and that it will continue to increase in the face of such findings. More on this soon….
